Reel In A Big Catch With Halibut Fishing Charters

Recreation & Sports Blog

Halibut fishing charters are a great way to get out on the water and experience a perfect day of fishing. Whether you're an experienced fisherman or just starting out, there's something for everyone when it comes to halibut fishing.

To help you prepare, here's what to expect when you go on a halibut fishing charter.

The Gear You'll Need

When you set out for your halibut fishing charter, you need to make sure that you have the right gear. Depending on the company, some may provide the necessary equipment for you or suggest which items you should bring along.

The gear could be included in the total cost of the charter, but in some cases, you may need to purchase or rent it separately. Make sure that you check with your charter provider before going out so that you don't show up unprepared.

Some of the recommended basics include polarized sunglasses, rain gear, sunscreen, and a hat or cap for protection from the sun. Don't forget bait if your charter service does not provide it. You can get different kinds of bait, such as jigging spoons, anchovies, and herring, to attract the halibut.

The Trip Itself

Most halibut fishing charters take place on larger boats that will take you out to the ocean's deep waters, where the halibut tend to be found. Depending on the company and the trip you choose, your charter may last for a few hours or even an entire day.

Whether it's in a single day or an extended trip, you can rest assured that you'll be out on the water for some great fishing. The trip will typically include stops at various spots where you can try your luck at catching a halibut.

When your trip begins, one of two things will happen. Either your captain will take you directly to where they know they can find fish nearshore, or they will drop anchor and allow the fish to come to them further offshore. Either way, you can trust that your captain knows the waters and has done their research to ensure a successful trip.

Your charter boat will be equipped with the necessary safety equipment, including life jackets and a first aid kit. So make sure to listen to your captain's instructions for your safety.

Making Sure You Have Fun

No matter how experienced (or inexperienced!) a fisherman you are, having fun should be priority number one on any halibut fishing charter. Be sure to take plenty of pictures during your trip — halibuts can be huge, so there are plenty of photo ops.

And don't forget snacks! Most charters also provide drinks such as beer and soda but feel free to pack some sandwiches or other snacks that everyone can enjoy while they wait patiently for a bite at the end of their line.
